Basic Accounting for Teens 101:   Course outline


This Accounting course is designed to teach children ages 13 – 16  the fundamentals of accounting, understanding various accounting themes, knowing different financial statements and how to connect accounting to our everyday life.

The course begins with explaining accounting.


1.What is accounting

Where accounting is being used, personal and Commercial

2. Importance of accounting. Practical use of accounting

3. Elements of accounting- income, expense, debit, credit, profit, loss, assets

                                       Liabilities, capital, equity

4. Practical use of the accounting elements

5. Financial statements – what are financial statements

Types of financial statements – profit and loss account(P&L), balance sheet, cash flow statement

6.  Importance of financial statements

7.  Profit & loss accounts – Revenues, Expenses, Profit & Loss. We will explore the meaning of these words and demonstrate how to prepare the cash flow statement from scratch.

8. Practicals on P&L Accounts. Showing students P& L accounts and going through them together, identifying every accounting elements.

9. Cash flow statement – operating,Investing and Financing. We will explore the meaning of these words and demonstrate how to prepare the Cash Flow Statement from scratch

10. Practicals on Cash flow statement. Showing students Cash flow statements and going through them together, identifying every accounting elements.

11. Balance sheet – Assets, liabilities and equity. We will explore the meaning of these words and demonstrates how to prepare the Balance Sheet from scratch
